This essay looks at the ethnic and cultural backgrounds of the various populations that make up the American nation. There are approximately 265 million American citizens: 74.8% of these are of European origin, 11.9% are of African origin, 9.5% are Hispanic, 3.1% Asian and 0.6% Native Indian. The white population is now increasing less rapidly than the population of the minorities, and, as a result, might represent only 50% of the total US population by 2080.

Extraits

[...] The Hispanics Originally, they came mainly from Mexico, Puerto Rico and Cuba. Many were well educated and well off, and went to the USA to flee communism and/or make a fortune. On the whole, they have integrated easily. The second wave of Hispanic immigrants, coming from Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic and Columbia, has had more difficulty. Unlike their predecessors, most of these immigrants have poor or no qualifications, and are therefore more likely to be unemployed. Their cultural integration is sometimes difficult, as many of them do not want American citizenship (all they want is the green card that enables them to work legally), and refuse to speak English. [...]

[...] After fighting in World War and later, in world war they became still more aware of the racism that forced them to live apart from, and in worse conditions than, the rest of American society. In the 1950s, they started acting together to put an end to segregation. Incidents broke out in Montgomery, Alabama, after a black woman, Rosa Parks, refused to give her seat on a bus to a white passenger. After that, incidents spread all over the country, and it was only then that many americans realized that there was something wrong with the system. [...]

[...] Thanks to his efforts and the politics of President John F. Kennedy (assassinated in 1963) and Lyndon B. Johnson, all forms of racial segregation became illegal in 1964, the year ML King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Unfortunately, MLK was assassinated in 1968. Today one third of African-Americans are well-off and identify more with their “brothers”. This does not mean that prejudices does not affect them, but when you have money, in a country where money is sacred, it does help. [...]

[...] Nobody really knows how to tackle the problem, and Democrats and Republicans disagree on the measures to be taken. Solutions to help this part of the black community have become all the more difficult to find, as they have begun to reject integration, expressing extremely violent anti-white and anti-Semitic views. They do not seem to take in account either the role played by the African despots who sold their ancestors to the white slave-traders, or the support they were given by the Jewish community at a crucial time in their history. [...]
